10. અજંતા-ઈલોરાની ગુફાઓ (કૈલાશ મંદિર)

૧. અજંતાની ગુફાઓ (Gujarati Medium)
અજંતાની ગુફાઓ મહારાષ્ટ્ર રાજ્યના ઔરંગાબાદ જિલ્લામાં અજંતા ગામ પાસે આવેલી છે. સહ્યાદ્રિ પર્વતમાળાને કોતરીને ઘોડાની નાળ આકારે અહીં કુલ ૨૯ ગુફાઓ આવેલી છે. આ ગુફાઓ વાસ્તુકલાની દૃષ્ટિએ અત્યંત મહત્વની છે.
- બે ભાગમાં વહેંચણી: આ ગુફાઓ (૧) ચિત્રકલા આધારિત અને (૨) શિલ્પકલા આધારિત છે. આ ચિત્રોનો મુખ્ય વિષય બૌદ્ધ ધર્મ છે.
- ગુફાઓના પ્રકાર: અજંતાની ગુફાઓને 'ચૈત્ય' અને 'વિહાર' એમ બે પ્રકારમાં વહેંચી શકાય. ૯, ૧૦, ૧૯, ૨૬ અને ૨૯ નંબરની ગુફાઓ ચૈત્ય છે (પ્રાર્થના ગૃહ), જ્યારે બાકીની ગુફાઓ વિહારો છે (બૌદ્ધ મઠ).
- પુનઃશોધ: સમય જતાં આ ગુફાઓ વિસરાઈ ગઈ હતી, જેને ઈ.સ. ૧૮૧૯માં એક અંગ્રેજ કેપ્ટન જોન સ્મિથે પુનઃસંશોધિત કરી હતી.
૨. ઈલોરાની ગુફાઓ અને કૈલાસ મંદિર (Gujarati Medium)
ઈલોરાની ગુફાઓનું નિર્માણ ઈ.સ. ૬૦૦ થી ઈ.સ. ૧૦૦૦ દરમિયાન થયેલું છે. અહીં એકબીજાથી જુદા એવા ગુફા મંદિરોના ત્રણ સમૂહો છે, જેમાં કુલ ૩૪ ગુફાઓ આવેલી છે.
- ૧ થી ૧૨ નંબરની ગુફાઓ: બૌદ્ધ ધર્મને લગતી છે.
- ૧૩ થી ૨૯ નંબરની ગુફાઓ: હિન્દુ ધર્મને લગતી છે (જેનું નિર્માણ રાષ્ટ્રકૂટ વંશના રાજાઓના સમયમાં થયું).
- ૩૦ થી ૩૪ નંબરની ગુફાઓ: જૈન ધર્મને લગતી છે.
અદ્ભુત સ્થાપત્ય: કૈલાસ મંદિર (ગુફા નં. ૧૬)
ઈલોરાની ૧૬ નંબરની ગુફામાં આવેલું કૈલાસ મંદિર એક વિશ્વ પ્રસિદ્ધ સ્મારક છે. આ અજાયબી એક જ મોટા પથ્થરમાંથી કોતરીને બનાવવામાં આવી છે. આ વિશાળ મંદિરની લંબાઈ ૫૦ મીટર, પહોળાઈ ૩૩ મીટર અને ઊંચાઈ ૩૦ મીટર જેટલી છે. કૈલાસ મંદિર તેના ભવ્ય દરવાજા, ઝરૂખા અને અનેક સુંદર સ્તંભોની શ્રેણીઓથી સુશોભિત છે. આ મંદિરની શોભા ખરેખર અવર્ણનીય છે અને તે પ્રાચીન ભારતીય સભ્યતાનું જીવંત પ્રદર્શન કરે છે.
1. Ajanta Caves (English Medium)
The Ajanta Caves are located near Ajanta village in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. Carved into the Sahyadri mountain range in a horseshoe shape, there are a total of 29 caves. These caves hold immense architectural and artistic significance.
- Division of Art: The caves are based on (1) painting and (2) sculpture. The main theme of these artworks is Buddhism.
- Types of Caves: They are divided into 'Chaityas' and 'Viharas'. Cave numbers 9, 10, 19, 26, and 29 are Chaityas (prayer halls), while the rest are Viharas (monasteries).
- Rediscovery: Over time, they were forgotten until British Captain John Smith rediscovered them in 1819.
2. Ellora Caves & Kailash Temple (English Medium)
The Ellora Caves were constructed between 600 AD and 1000 AD. There is a cluster of three different types of cave temples, making a total of 34 caves. It displays the cultural harmony of ancient India.
- Caves 1 to 12: Dedicated to Buddhism.
- Caves 13 to 29: Dedicated to Hinduism (built during the reign of Rashtrakuta kings).
- Caves 30 to 34: Dedicated to Jainism.
Architectural Marvel: Kailash Temple (Cave 16)
The Kailash Temple, situated in cave number 16 of Ellora, is a world-renowned monument. This wonder is monolithically carved out of a single massive rock. The dimensions of this huge temple are 50 meters in length, 33 meters in width, and 30 meters in height. The temple is exquisitely adorned with beautiful doors, balconies (zarukhas), and a series of magnificent pillars. Its beauty is truly indescribable and it stands as a living exhibition of ancient Indian civilization.
