5 / 11

(Rice)

🌾 India's Most Important Grain Crop : Paddy (Rice)

Paddy (Rice) is our most important grain crop. For a detailed 5-6 marks long answer, its geographical and economic details are as follows:

🌍 1. Importance and Global Standing

  • 🔸 A large part of the world's population and almost half (50%) of India's population consumes rice.
  • 🔸 In global paddy production, India ranks second after China.
  • 🔸 Paddy is planted in one-fourth (1/4th) of the total cultivated area of India.

🌦️ 2. Favorable Conditions for Cultivation

  • Season: Paddy is a tropical Kharif crop, but where irrigation is available, a summer crop can also be taken.
  • Temperature: For higher production, a hot and humid climate and a minimum temperature of 20°C are required.
  • Rainfall: It requires 100 cm or more of rainfall.
  • Soil: Fertile alluvial soil of river plains and deltas is highly suitable.

📍 3. Major Producing States

  • Major Producers: West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha.
  • Multiple Crops: In states like West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu, the crop is taken two to three times a year.
  • Low Rainfall Areas: In areas with less rainfall like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, this crop is grown using irrigation.
  • Gujarat: Paddy is cultivated in districts like Surat, Tapi, Panchmahal, Ahmedabad, Kheda, Anand, and Valsad.

💧 4. Farming Method and Irrigation

  • Labor: Paddy cultivation requires more human labor.
  • Irrigation: Although it is a water-intensive crop, instead of keeping the field constantly submerged, it can be grown with less water using sprinkler irrigation (ફુવારા પદ્ધતિ).
