2. GSEB Std 10 Social Science: Most IMP Image-Based Questions
Don't Lose Easy Marks to "Guess the Picture" Questions in Class 10 Social Science!
Are you losing easy marks in your GSEB Class 10 Social Science board exams just because of a single picture? Many students memorize the entire textbook perfectly but get completely stumped when an image-based question appears in Section C or D. As an experienced educator, I've seen students miss out on solid 3 or 4 marks simply because they couldn't visually identify the Konark Sun Temple or a paddy field on the exam paper!
Part 1: Image-Based Questions Asked in Board Exams
Here is a list of important questions that have been asked by the Gujarat Board (GSEB) in previous years:
1. Qutub Minar
Image: A photo of a tall, historical minaret.
Questions Asked: (1) Name this monument. (2) In which city is it located? (3) Who started its construction?
Year/Paper Code: 2025.
2. Konark Sun Temple
Image: A photo of an ancient temple with chariot wheels.
Questions Asked: (1) Which monument is shown in the picture? (2) In which state is it located? (3) In what shape is it built?
Year/Paper Code: Year 2024.
3. Ruins of an Ancient University / Stupa

Questions Asked: Which university is shown in the given picture? Explain in detail. (This is a direct 3-mark question).
Year/Paper Code: 2022.
4. Tea & Coffee Plantation
Image: A picture of women plucking leaves in a sloping field with baskets, alongside a cup of tea.
Questions Asked: Identify the crop from the picture and give details about its required temperature, rainfall, suitable soil, and producing states. (4 marks).
Year/Paper Code: 2022.
5. Paddy / Rice Farming
Image: A picture of farmers planting paddy in a water-filled field.
Questions Asked: The given picture shows a major cereal crop of India. Which crop is it? Give detailed information about this crop. (4 marks).
Year/Paper Code: 2022.
6. Quality Certification Logos

Questions Asked: Identify the given logos and write their full names.
Year/Paper Code: 2024.
Part 2: Expected Image-Based Questions
Based on the Std 10 Social Science syllabus, these are images that might not have been asked yet, but are highly important (Most IMP) for your upcoming exams:
A. Cultural Heritage & Monuments:
- Taj Mahal: You may be shown a picture and asked which river it is situated on, who built it, and why.
- Rani Ki Vav: You might see a photo of this stepwell in Patan, Gujarat, and be asked to name the state and when it received World Heritage status.
- Red Fort, Delhi: You could be given a picture and asked to name the main buildings inside it (like Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas).
- Ajanta-Ellora Caves (Kailash Temple): A photo of the temple carved out of a single huge rock can be given to ask about its construction and state (Maharashtra).
- Lothal or Dholavira: An image of the ancient drainage system or dockyard can be shown to ask about the specific features of these Indus Valley Civilization cities.
B. Agriculture & Crops (Chapter 10):
- Cotton: A picture of a blooming cotton plant can be shown to ask which type of soil (Black Soil) is most suitable for this crop.
- Wheat: A picture of wheat stalks can be given to ask which crop is called the 'King of Grains' and what its favorable geographical conditions are.
- Sugarcane: A picture of a sugarcane field can be shown to ask the names of the leading states in its production.
C. Economics & Consumer Awareness (Logos - Chapter 18):
- Agmark: This logo is applied to agricultural products (like ghee, oil, and spices).
- FPO: This logo is applied to fruit-based products (like jam and juice).
- Woolmark: A logo showing the purity and quality of woolen products and clothing.
- Ecomark: A picture of an 'Earthen Pot' can be given to ask which mark is applied to environment-friendly products.
- ISO / Hallmark: A picture of the hallmark showing the purity of gold jewelry.
The Gujarat Board strategically uses these visual questions to test your presence of mind. The pattern is usually very predictable: you will face images of historical monuments, agricultural practices, or certification logos. For instance, a picture of a tall, ancient minaret isn't just a building; it's a direct 3-mark question asking for its exact name, location, and builder (Qutub Minar). Similarly, a photo of women plucking leaves on a hilly slope is your cue to write a detailed 4-mark note on Tea plantations, covering temperature, rainfall, and producing states.
Don't let these specific questions lower your overall grade. To score full marks, focus heavily on the textbook images, especially the chapters covering India's cultural heritage (Chapters 3 to 6) and agriculture (Chapter 10). Memorize the key visual traits of these photos (like the chariot wheels of Konark or the ISI/HACCP logos), and those guaranteed board exam marks are entirely yours!
